LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Churchill Downs urges people to wear pink on Kentucky Oaks Day in May to support breast cancer awareness, and now the famed Louisville track is lighting up its iconic twin spires in red to raise awareness that heart disease is the chief killer of women.
Friday is National Wear Red Day, and the track is lighting the spires starting at 6 a.m. EST to support the American Heart Association.
Churchill Downs President Kevin Flanery says nearly everyone knows someone who has been affected by heart disease.
Another landmark, the Belle of Louisville, is also joining in by hanging a hand-designed red dress on her port side, where it can be seen from the Fourth Street Wharf at the Ohio River.
Local government buildings, health facilities and businesses will also participate.
