MINGO COUNTY, W. Va. (WYMT/WSAZ) - On the surface Laurel Lake is serene and tranquil, but what sonar detected below is anything but.
"Really spooky -- thinking about someone in the neighborhood actually doing something like that," said a woman who lives nearby who didn't want to be identified.
A missing woman who was murdered was found in the depths of Laurel Lake.
It was just up the road from the lake where Evelyn Farnum lived but went missing on December 30th.
Early Sunday afternoon, her black SUV was pulled out of the lake with her body still inside.
"We're the kind of type that everybody knows everybody, you know what I'm saying, everybody trusts everybody," said the unidentified neighbor.
In an interesting twist, the man who reported her missing was her boyfriend and third cousin, Donald Medley, who was charged with murder on Saturday night after police say he confessed to killing Farnum.
"They had gotten into a fight, he became angered with her -- supposedly grabbed her, choked her to death and struck her in the face," said Trooper J.J. Dean of the West Virginia State Police.
Medley then called his brother, Gregory, for help. Police say they pushed her body and SUV into the murky lake but a witness later came forward to tip off troopers.
"Those people they should suffer for what they've done -- and they will in their own way -- but, it's something you don't think would happen around here, but it did," said the unidentified neighbor.
And while the community is left to understand why, the brothers sit in jail.
