Two homeless people are in jail, accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of items from a London attorney.
London Police say Jonathan Freeman, 32, and his girlfriend Brittany Smith, 28, both of Manchester, broke into attorney David Howard's office in London.
Attorney David Howard came home from a Florida vacation Saturday. While he was gone, thieves had broken into his office and destroyed his safe.
"It was laying on the floor with the door laying beside of it and there was sanding dust everywhere," Howard said.
He says the thieves took cash for his business and personal items.
"It was completely devastating. You feel violated when someone just takes things from you and that's how I felt," said Howard.
Howard says an anonymous tip led police to catch the suspects and recover his stolen items.
The tip led police to the homeless shelter next door. Investigators say witness interviews determined that two people had stayed at the shelter and recently left after claiming they got a large amount of cash. The two suspects, Jonathan Freeman and Brittany Smith, were found in the Days Inn near KY West 80.
"Went to the room and in plain view saw merchandise that had been taken from the law office," said Det. Allen Harris.
Police arrested the couple and returned the cash, jewelry, and computers to Howard.
"There's still some stuff I've not recovered and probably never will that had more sentimental value than anything else. The person who provided that tip, my heartfelt thanks goes out to them. If it hadn't been for that, I would've been totally devastated, recovered nothing," said Howard.
Freeman is charged with burglary and receiving stolen property. Smith is charged with receiving stolen property. They are being held at the Laurel County Jail. They are due in court on Tuesday.
Police say Freeman has a criminal history.
