The University of Kentucky's Board of Trustees voted 17-2 Tuesday to approve a $2.6 billion budget for the fiscal year, starting July 1. The budget includes a multi-million dollar plan to modernize campus security.
UK hopes students can return this fall with improvements already underway.
Campus officials say the new $4.8 million system will allow for dramatic improvements. For example, buildings that are individually locked down, will all be run by a centralized access control system. UK Assistant Vice President for Campus Services Anthany Beatty says that will allow the school to safeguard students much faster in an emergency.
A new video management system will allow campus police to monitor areas remotely with mobile devices giving officers more versatility. Also, an expanded warning system will give immediate notifications to students with a combination of text messages, calls, warning speakers, and overhead paging.
The first phase of the new system is expected to be in place by end of summer with the improved video management system operational by the Spring 2013 semester.
