A man fires shots at state police, they return fire, and hours later that man is found dead in the woods. We've been following this story since it broke early Wednesday morning.
It turned into a large standoff that lasted about five hours. Police released the name of the suspect late Wednesday night. He is David Wayne Madewell, 26, of Springfield, Ohio. Police are still not saying how he died.
It took a large police presence for this situation - an armed man, on the loose.
"The subject started firing at our units - we returned fire," said Shane Jacobs, with Kentucky State Police.
Police got a call Wednesday morning that a man was firing shots into a home on Tway Hollow Road. When authorities got there, they became the target.
"We just set up a perimeter around the residence and waited on our special response team to show up," said Jacobs.
Madewell took off into the woods. Police couldn't find him. All the commotion attracted a crowd.
A chopper and special units from Lexington were called in. It wasn't long before Madewell was found dead.
"We all know each other, lock our doors, keep them safe," said Geraldine McKnight-King, who works at Pizza Hut.
Employees at the Pizza Hut said it is upsetting all of this happened right behind their restaurant.
"We just tried to get in the building and not let anyone else get hurt, contacted all the employees and told them not to come in," said Brittany Tye Weaver, a Pizza Hut employee.
Managers said they feel for the victim's family despite the circumstances.
"There's people that lost someone. There's a death, and it bothers me," said McKnight-King.
A death for which the details are not clear and probably will not be for some time.
"At this point, it is very early in the investigation, and the investigation is ongoing," said Jacobs.
People at the scene this afternoon who identified themselves as family members of the victim said they had no comment.
UPDATE: Police say at around eight this morning they recieved a call from a lady on Tway Hollow Road who said a man was shooting at her home.
Officials with Kentucky State Police say "With in minutes they responded and the man then started shooting at them."
The man was last seen running into the hill wearing a white flannel shirt and blue jeans.
Police say "They are waiting on a special response team from Lexington and would not comment on if they returned fire."
Police in Harlan County are on the scene of an active shooting.
Police received a complaint about a man, and when they went to investigate he started firing shots.
Police say he then ran off into the woods somewhere behind the Pizza Hut in Harlan and is actively firing at police.
Police are trying to get the man out of the woods and have called in a helicopter to assist.
