UPIKE debate continues on Tuesday

The debate concerning the University of Pikeville being allowed to become the state's 9th public university is expected to continue Tuesday in Frankfort.

UPIKE's President Paul Patton says eastern Kentucky needs a regional comprehensive university to get more diplomas in the hands of students.

Morehead State University President Dr. Wayne Andrews says other state schools are serving the region and building another public university could harm those efforts.

Meanwhile, consultants from the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems met with local leaders in Harlan County.

The fact finding meeting allowed those officials to gather information about how leaders in this region feel about the University of Pikeville being brought into the state system of higher education.

Last month officials met with faculty, students, and community members in Pikeville.
