USPS set to start closing mail processing plants this week

The USPS will begin consolidating and closing dozens of mail processing plants this week.

A last-minute effort by the American Postal Workers Union to stop the plan failed on Friday and now some 48 plants across the country will be consolidated during the next two months.

The agency also says it's reducing the size of its workforce.

It offered buyouts and retirement packages for 21,000 postmasters as well as 45,000 mail handlers.
