Battalion Chief Craig Wink helped rescue a man early Monday evening after he crashed his ultralight aircraft onto a man's farm, right beside a Scott County park. Witnesses say the man took off, and seconds later, came crashing to the ground.
"It looked like he had a good, open area to go. May not have seen the power lines. May not have known it was there," says Chief Wink.
After the pilot clipped the power line, Chief Wink estimates he dropped a good 30 to 40 feet to the ground. Rescue crews say the pilot wasn't trapped or tangled in his aircraft at all. They were able to get him out quickly and to a hospital. They are describing his injuries as very serious ones. He most likely has two fractured ankles, a broken arm, and internal bleeding. Chief Wink says the man is lucky to be alive.
"He was alert, talking. He had some traumatic injuries to his legs and arms from what I saw. They did a rapid assessment, packaged him, and it was off to UK Medical Center," said Wink.
The pilot's name and condition are unknown at this time.
