Hazard, Ky. (WYMT)-- Veterans in Eastern Kentucky can get advanced treatment in Lexington if they need it, and worry less about how to make the trip.
The Veterans Transportation Service picks veterans up at local Veterans Affairs clinics, takes them to appointments in Lexington, and drops them back off at the local clinics.
"This is an absolutely free service for any veteran that's enrolled at the VA for healthcare," said Robert Arrowood, VTS Mobility Manager.
He also notes the van used for transport is wheelchair accessible, allowing more veterans to use the service.
"Every week we have more and more veterans calling in," Arrowood said.
The van features a DVD player, but the company of other veterans also makes for an enjoyable ride, said Paul Craigmyle, who uses the service.
They tell "war stories," Craigmyle said with a chuckle.
Hubert Dye likes to "look at the scenery" on the drive.
Ernest Perkins of Clay County also uses the service. He was one of the first to use it, Arrowood said.
"For a long time, I wasn't able to go [to Lexington]. I had to miss appointments, and I found out about this program, and this program came in very good," Perkins said.
