DICKENSON COUNTY, Va. (WYMT/Bristol Herald Courier) - Virginia State Police are investigating a Tuesday morning incident where a Dickenson County deputy shot and killed a suspect in the Caney Ridge community.
The deputy, whose name was not released, responded to a residence in the 100 block of Paul Stanley Road after a 911 call was made from the home regarding an assault. Gary Dean Carty, 60, of Clintwood was confronted by the deputy on the property and charged at the officer with a knife, the report said.
The deputy then fired his gun at Carty, who later died from his injuries at Bristol Regional Medical Center, according to State Police Public Relations Manager Corinne Geller.
The deputy was not injured and the incident is currently under investigation by the Virginia State Police's Bureau of Criminal Investigation Police Shooting Investigative Team.
