PERRY Co., Ky. (WYMT) - Nothing can ruin a vacation more than the idea of a burglar in your home.

Landlord and Avawam fire chief Leonard Toler says simple steps to protect your home could allow you to relax and enjoy your summer vacation.

Keeping your curtains and blinds as they usually are, alerting the post office to stop mail delivery and locking every door.

Toler says these precautions let burglars know they are not welcome.

"Set some lights on a timer that will come on and off that way people will think your home even if you are not," said Toler.

When going on vacation he says tell a neighbor or friend you trust.

"Say hey I'm going to be gone. Do you care to watch my place? If you see anything call the landlord, police department or sheriffs department.," said Toler.

This landlord says always lock your sliding glass doors and windows.

Hazard police officials like James East say updating your status on social media could let unwanted visitors know you are out of town.

"Never report on a social media anywhere that you may be going. Whether it's to the grocery store or on vacation. So that people are not made aware of where you are at any particular time,"

Security steps like these allow you to enjoy your time away from home.
