PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) – Pikeville celebrated Veterans Day a couple days early.
It was days before Veterans Day but these local heroes are no less proud.
At Friday’s Pikeville Medical Center’s Veterans Day Celebration, hundreds came to honor them; especially those who weren't appreciated during their time of service.
“When I came back, to hunt for a job, you couldn't tell them you were a Veteran or a Vietnam Veteran anyway, and now it's all a different story,” said Veteran, Harold Sawyers.
The celebration featured country music star Aaron Tippin.
Veterans throughout the area were invited to join in the celebration.
Ten schools from Pike and Floyd counties also participated.
Veterans said they were glad to have them there.
“The younger kids here today, I'm glad to see them here with their little flags flying that means a lot to veterans,” said Larry Roberts with the Disabled American Veterans.
Free lunch and health screening were available after the ceremony.
Veterans Day is on Sunday and will be observed by government offices on Monday.
