HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Several restaurants offered veterans discounts or even a free meal on Monday.

Folks at Ponderosa Steakhouse in Hazard said they changed their plans this year to make sure veterans would know they appreciate their service. Veterans and active military were able to get a free meal and drink. Restaurant workers said they made sure to get the word out ahead of time.

“We had a lot more people turn out this year,” said Assistant Manager Marsha Miller.
“We had several calls yesterday about it and different counties has come out.”

They said they wanted to make sure they could serve those who served the country.

“We actually done a lot of marketing in other counties, too,” said General Manager Kay Miller.
“We actually called all the other counties and done all that kind of thing too and called the V.F.W.’s.”

Miller said they had made a lot of announcements online and on Facebook.

“It's really made a big difference this year,” said Miller.

Free meals were also given out at the Morehead and Paintsville locations. They said hundreds of people showed up.
