Video of Pike County teacher causes concern for parent

BELFRY, Ky. (WYMT)- Is it verbal abuse or just a strict teacher doing her job? A video going viral on Facebook accuses one Pike County teacher of bullying her students It’s been shared almost 6,000 times in just a matter of days. It now has the attention of school district officials.

The video supposedly features the voice of Belfry Middle School's Alice Smith. The voice talks down very strongly about the student’s performance.

She says, “People got big old F's in my room. They're lucky if they have a three percent. Three percent! Don't do diddly squat! You don't do anything. You're wasting space! You're just taking up space. You're breathing air somebody else could benefit from. You need to stay home.”

The video was recorded on Adriana Hackney's 11-year-old son's cell phone. She is the one who posted it. Hackney said, “I was frustrated and I was angry and I put it on Facebook because no child, period, anywhere should be called a waste of space or a waste of oxygen.”

She says it's bullying, even titled the video as "Abuse in the Pike County School District." Hackney went on to say, “I would like to see a safe environment for our kids. No child should fear its teacher. No child should go to school in fear or cry and beg not to go to school.”

The superintendent says because it's a personnel issue at hand he can't discuss many of the issues behind it but he says he is glad it was brought to his attention and they are dealing with it.

David Lester the Pike County Superintendent said, “You have talked to the principal and he has suggested that this is certainly out of character for that teacher. She is a young teacher, and she is relatively new to teaching, the education profession. We will work with the situation to make sure that it doesn't occur again. “

Hackney says all she wanted was to draw attention to the matter.

The superintendent could not comment on any action taken. He says he did meet with smith and the principal of the school earlier today to insure it would not happen again.
