Visitation service held for pastor and former state senator

JACKSON, Ky. (WYMT) – Family and friends gathered to remember a well known pastor and former state senator in Breathitt County tonight.

His voice was heard on radio stations throughout Eastern Kentucky for 60 years.

WSGS in Hazard carried his "Voice of the Mountains" broadcast from 1977 until just last year.

Reverend Walter Strong was not only known for his radio broadcasts, but his love for the church.

“He was a man of compassion and for the work that he did; he couldn't be still he had to be doing something,” said lifelong friend Rodney Williams.

He established eight churches across the region, hosted his own TV show at one time, and also served in the Kentucky senate from 1973 to 1977.

Family members say even though he will be missed, they know he is in a better place.

“I know he's home in heaven and rejoicing with the saints and that's a glorious thing,” said Strong’s son, Rodney Strong.

And that is something they say they know for certain because of his faith that was visible until the end.

“He was still sharing up until the very last moment, even the people that were caring for him he would ask, if they had gone to church,” said Strong.

Strong was also a world war two veteran and he will be buried in Breathitt County.

The funeral service is set for tomorrow at one o-clock.
