W.Va. bank robber says sheriff, others beat him

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - A Harpers Ferry man doing time for bank
robbery is suing the Jefferson County sheriff and 14 unidentified
officers he says beat him severely after a vehicle chase in 2010.
Mark Daniel Haines is currently an inmate at Maryland's
Allegheny County Detention Center.
The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Martinsburg claims
Sheriff Bobby Shirley kicked him in the head and stomped on his
face while others punched and used stun guns.
Shirley said Wednesday he hasn't seen the lawsuit and couldn't
immediately comment.
Authorities say Haines robbed two Maryland banks and one in
Martinsburg just days before attempting to rob the City National in
Ranson on Dec. 27, 2010.
A long pursuit ended when officers used spikes to flatten the
tires on the stolen truck he was driving.
