W.Va. ed department says some audit info incorrect

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The West Virginia Department of
Education is questioning some findings in an outside audit of the
state's public school system.

The department says in a Dec. 14 letter to the auditors that
some recommendations are based on incorrect information or
unfamiliarity with the system.

auditors incorrectly calculated the average teacher salary in the

The department also takes issue with a recommendation to reduce its size, saying the suggestion is based on an unfair comparison with education departments in other states.

Public Works and MGT of America conducted the audit. Public
Works vice president Marion Reitz says auditors are reviewing the
department's letter.
