W.Va. gov's general counsel leaving

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The general counsel for West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin is returning to the private sector.

Tomblin says G. Kurt Dettinger filed a letter Wednesday with the West Virginia Ethics Commission seeking an employment exemption. Dettinger joined Tomblin's administration in November 2010.

Tomblin says Dettinger's leadership and intellect were vital to the success of his administration.

Tomblin has named Charleston attorney Peter G. Markham as Dettinger's successor. Markham is a partner at Guthrie and Thomas.

Markham earned his undergraduate degree at Virginia Tech and holds law degrees from West Virginia University and the London School of Economics.
