Water outage in parts of Pike County

A couple thousand customers are without water service in parts of Pike County. Mountain Water District officials say a water pump broke at the plant by Harless Creek, creating problems from Marrowbone to Elkhorn City.

A boil water advisory is also in effect in those areas.

A replacement pump is on the way from Dalton, Georgia. Crews hope to have it installed and working by midnight.

Workers say the vacuum pump quit working on Sunday. There was no back-up.
"Our alternate pump had been sent off about three weeks ago. It had some issues with it. We're having it repaired," said Roy Sawyers, Mountain Water District Administrator.

Mountain Water District workers say there is still some water left in the lines. Customers on US-460 from Marrowbone to Elkhorn City and Route 195 to Ashcamp Mountain are under a boil water advisory.
"The boil water advisory is where the pumps are not running. We've drained basically our tanks, and we just want to be able to flush our old system real good to get any type of dirt, bacteria, anything in the system out," said Sawyers.

Workers at the 3 Way Restaurant are taking precautions.
"We just mainly keep our water boiled. We make sure they got water in there to wash their hands, stuff like that, keep water in a jug for them to drink if they order water, we have jug water," said Missy Pigg.

Mountain Water District officials say the new pump will be installed immediately when it arrives from Georgia. They hope to have the water working early Tuesday.
They ask customers to still conserve water for a few days this week until the water tanks are filled back up to normal levels.

Pike County Emergency Management workers are handing out water in Marrowbone, Feds Creek, and Elkhorn City. It is available is at the fire stations, and people need to show a water bill or driver's license to get the free water.
