Services offered not necessary for water customers

Some of the 1800 customers in the McKinney Water District have received letters from a company called HomeServe saying they need to purchase insurance for their water lines, but it's not necessary.

Nicki Bastin has seen it before...

"Their concern was we were asking them for more money and we're not. We weren't a couple years ago and we aren't this time," said Bastin.

She says phone calls and customers in the McKinney Water District have come in with questions about a letter mailed to their homes.

"Without this coverage you are responsible for the full cost of maintaining and repairing the water service line that brings fresh water to your property," reads part of the letter.

Bastin says it's not required at all.

"I don't know of anyone who has water lines insured. Besides, we don't ask the customers to repair our lines, we do that on our own," explained Bastin.

She and other water district officials are now worried for their customers.

"I don't like it. It's hard enough for some of our customers to pay their water bills. And with the economy like it is, no one needs to have to deal with this."

Since the story aired on WKYT, several calls came in from people exposed to the same letters.
