BUCKHORN, Ky (WYMT) - Fall is here and that means state parks are getting busier.
But that has not stopped staff at Buckhorn Lake State Park from trying to find new ways to bring in even more guests to the area.
If you have visited Buckhorn Lake this time of year, you know color covers the mountains.
Park staff member Jason Mullins said that is a big attraction for the state park.
"This is a busy time of year for us. A lot of people come from the cities to watch the fall foliage. It is fixing to peak here, so we get a lot of people that just drive in just to see the scenery and they end up staying the night," said Mullins.
Mullins said they expect business like families stopping by for hiking trips but they are not satisfied with just that.
So park staff are brainstorming to find new ways to bring folks to Buckhorn.
One of those ideas is the Women's Wellness Weekend.
This is the third year for the event, which includes massage therapy, stress release classes and yoga.
Cheryl Compton gave massages at the event and said this is a unique experience for visitors.
"I think it is wonderful to come up here in the nature. A lot of the people had never had massage, had never had facial because if you go to a resort, they are very over priced. So I try to keep it where everyone can afford," said Compton.
Part of the weekend festivities included a walk to raise money for breast cancer research.
Compton said the beauty of Buckhorn is that guests have the opportunity to do whatever they want.
"It is not like you have to be on a schedule and do what everybody says. You come, relax and it is time to spend time doing what you want to do and I think every woman deserves that," said Compton.
Staff say the wellness weekend and walk are both to promote healthy living in the mountains.
The park also has elk tours coming up.
Mullins said if you are interested in joining, you should give the park a call at 606-398-7510.
