CORBIN, Ky. (WYMT) - Officials say he hit a man with an ashtray and then beat him to death. 35-year-old Samuel Plotnick is charged with murder in the death of 55-year-old Jimmy Dean Peace.
Authorities say Plotnick beat Peace the night of December 15th. The victim was undergoing treatment at U.K. Hospital in Lexington, but died late Wednesday as a result of his injuries.
Jimmy Dean Peace's stepfather Harold Bowlin says the whole family is stunned by the news of his death.
"He was just, like I said just trying to raise his kid," said Bowlin. "Should never have happened. No reason for it."
The attack occurred the night of December 15th. Authorities say Peace ... 35-year-old Samuel E. Plotnick, and one other individual were at Peace's residence in Corbin when the alleged beating took place. The sheriff says he is not sure why Plotnick began to allegedly attack Peace.
"According to the victim that night, he don't know what happened, just all at once he just jumped on him and started beating him," said Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell.
The sheriff says Peace sustained serious injuries to his head and abdomen in the attack. After several days in the hospital, Peace died late Wednesday. The victim's family says they want Plotnick to pay for Peace's murder.
"He couldn't get enough time out of this for me, to satisfy me," said Bowlin.
The family will not have to wait long. Plotnick's case is scheduled to be heard by the Whitley County Grand Jury January 7th. Along with the murder charge, Plotnick faces charges of menacing, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and assault 2nd degree.
