WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - The former Lion Uniform plant in Williamsburg was abandoned and vandalized. Now, the plant has been renovated and makes pet treats. The owner of the American Pet Food Manufacturing Company about her plans to expand that business and bring more job opportunities to the people of Whitley County.

Kim Monday, the President and CEO of American Pet Food Manufacturing Company, is from Williamsburg. She says she wanted to create this pet treat manufacturing company in Williamsburg partly due to the job skills of the people in Whitley County.

"They have great manufacturing skills and they have great work ethics. So we have found a pool of very strong candidates," said Monday.

The pool of job candidates is expected to grow as Monday says they will expand the manufacturing plant to all four buildings on the property.

The owner of the company says there are very few pet treat manufacturers in the country. She says one of her goals is to bring more manufacturing jobs to the United States.

"That's what it's all about. It's about bringing manufacturing to the U.S., bringing jobs back to the U.S. and to be able to do that here in Williamsburg, Kentucky is a dream come true," Monday said.

American Pet Food Manufacturing Company supplies pet treats for Dog Gone Jerky as well as retailers. The mayor, Roddy Harrison, says he is excited about all of the labels saying the words "manufactured in Williamsburg."

"You think of Toyota and you think of Georgetown. You think of hershey with Pennsylvania. They're just synonymous with the name and the town and that's kind of what I would love to see," said Harrison.

City of Williamsburg officials agreed to sell the property to the company for one dollar. The mayor says this decision was based on his expectations the company will have great success in the future.

Right now 21 people work at the company. The owner says she hopes to have 80 employees working at the plant by the end of the year. She hopes to have the expansion project finished and have 100 people employed in 16 months.
