Wind tears the roof off a Cumberland storefront

Updated: Thu 6:52 PM, Dec 20, 2012

CUMBERLAND, Ky. (WYMT) - Some Harlan County business owners are dealing with damage, thanks to mother nature. A gust of wind tore the roof off a storefront in Cumberland.

Cumberland police say they received several calls Tuesday about fallen trees and downed power lines from high winds, but the worst damage happened right on Main Street.

Around noon Tuesday, witnesses say a great gust of wind lifted the roof off an empty storefront in downtown Cumberland, scattering debris into the road and leaving the rest dangling from the building. Police had the street blocked off until all the mess could be cleared.

"We are going to keep the road closed as long as we have to, due to the remainder of the roof hanging unsecured, and fear of more wind, strong wind coming through throughout the night," said Sargent Silas Whitehead of the Cumberland P.D.

Pieces of the roof broke the window of a business across the street, but no injures have been reported.
