PERRY COUTNY, Ky. (WYMT) Imagine the shock a Pennsylvania woman had after finding a black widow in the bunch of grapes she had just bought from the grocery store!
The eight legged creatures are known for their red hour-glass symbol and typically like to build their nests low to the ground.
“They tend to be found in attics, basements, under clutter, in garages, old bans, outhouses, under rocks, places like that,” Perry County Extension Agent Charles May said.
They’re also known for their bite, which although rare, could result in death!
“Some people could probably be bit by one and never know they were bit by it. Just kind of feel bad for a day. Other folks could have symptoms similar to a heart attack: chest pain, high blood pressure, sweating, rapid pulse and even go into convulsions,” May added.
As we head into this Thanksgiving holiday, make sure you wash all produce before serving and if you do happen to get bit, seek medical attention immediately.
“Especially if it’s a young child or an older adult or someone with a compromised immune system, they need to see medical attention for that. And hopefully if they need anti-venom, they could get that and be fine,” May said.
There have not been any cases similar to this reported in Kentucky.
