Woman killed while crossing street

DANVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - Linda Knight is used to rushing across busy Main Street in downtown Danville.

“I cross it usually two or three times a day…it is hectic,” said Knight of the thoroughfare.

But on Sunday night, Shirley Carter of Danville was hit crossing the road… just a few feet from her home..a retirement complex she had just moved into on Friday.
“It made me sick to my stomach last night. I couldn’t sleep. I’ve been nervous about it all day,” said Knight of the 71 year old woman's death.

Police say it appears the incident was merely an accident.

“We will continue to follow that and if anything rises to a criminal level of course we will pursue that but initally we don’t see anything to lead us to believe that,” said Captain Robert Estill with Danville Police.

The part of the road where the accident happened does not have crosswalks with the closest ones being several hundred yards to either side. People say pedestrians usually dart across the road while rying to get to the numerous businesses in the area.

Carter’s relatives say they hope the accident will be a sign that safety improvements are needed.

Family members also say they currently working on funeral arrangements at Stith Funeral Home in Danville.
