A judge sentenced Kathy Coy Thursday. She pleaded guilty but mentally ill last month to the murder of Jamie Stice.
Last month, Coy pleaded guilty to killing the 21-year-old and cutting her unborn baby out of her stomach. Bowling Green Police say she mutilated and abandoned Stice in a wooded area, then took the baby to a local hospital, pretending it was her own.
With her guilty but mentally ill plea, the judge sentenced her Thursday to life in prison without parole.
"There's no words to express. I'm not satisfied and I'll never be, but I am grateful that my family has closure," says Stice's brother Eric.
Coy's family released a statement through email,
"We would like to give out heartfelt sympathies to the family of Jamie Stice. We grieve the harm done to the baby Isaiah due to the circumstances of this birth and the loss of his mother...No one wins in a situation likes this, but we can pray some good will come of this. Mental illness is real and it is almost impossible to get help for a family member who is ill, as it infringes on their right to refuse treatment. Mentally ill people do not know they are ill and in this case no one did anything until it was too late. "
