A Perry County woman battling cancer loses her home after a weekend fire. Luckily, Rita Fugate and her 9 year old daughter, Nicole, got out alive...but there is nothing left of their home.

A neighbor says Rita had just come home from the hospital and she was cooking and fell asleep. Luckily she woke up in time to get out of the burning house.

A fire got the best of Rita Fugate's house on Saturday and the neighbors who live next door were home when it happened.

"When we opened the door we could naturally see their house. There was flames coming out the windows. There was terrible, horrible smoke," said Linda Dunn, Fugate's next door neighbor.

Luckily, Fugate and her daughter got out safely and the fire did not spread to other homes in the area, but Fugate's home is destroyed.

"Theres no way this house is going to ever be lived in again. It's going to have to be knocked down. It's black completely inside. Everything is charred," said Richard Crowe, the director of United Way.

"They're in dire need, they really are. It's just such a sad thing to loose everything," Dunn said.

now, the united way is trying to help the family bounce back.

"Anyone who has been through a house fire and lose everything knows just how naked you feel. You just loose everything. You don't know what to do next," Crowe said.

By starting a collection.

"She'll need clothing. She'll need household items. She'll need toys for the daughter. She wears a size 14 and the daughter wears a size 8," said Crowe.
