Harlan County house fire kills one

CRANKS, Ky. (WYMT) - One person is dead after a house fire in the Cranks community of Harlan County. Police do not know the victim's identity at this time. One man says it is his mother.

It was just after 2 a.m. when Richard Madrey answered a call no son wants to receive.

"I called my cousins and they told me the house was in flames and that they couldn't find her," said Madrey.

Madrey says he immediately jumped in his car and went to his mother's home in Harlan County. He says it took him two and a half hours to get there from his home in Tennessee.

Sixty-one year old Shirley Madrey, who was a widow, lived alone in the home.

When Madrey arrived, his worst fears became a reality.

"I knew she was gone," Madrey said.

A body was found in Shirley Madrey's bedroom leading her son to believe there is no doubt that it's her. Investigators continue to sort through the rubble to find the exact cause of the fire.

Her son says he knows how she would want him to handle the situation.

"My mother raised me to think positive and look at the brighter side of it and don't ponder on the sadness. But right now i'm having a hard time with that," said Madrey.

Neighbors say they heard a loud explosion and then saw the house covered in flames. Madrey says the house was completely covered in flames when he arrived.

Police say the body is being sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office to identify the victim. No foul play is suspected at this time.
