Kentucky To Get Defense Funding

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Mitch McConnell announced today that a House/Senate Conference Committee approved his requests for over $59 million in funding for several Kentucky defense-related projects. The funding, included in the FY’07 Defense Appropriations Conference Report, is expected to pass the Senate this week and then go to President Bush for his signature.

“Kentucky’s military installations, defense facilities and universities are involved in important research and development projects that are bolstering our national defense,” said McConnell. “This funding is critical to their research and I am pleased to have been able to help out.”

Senator McConnell, a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, secured the following funding for Kentucky:

NAVAL GUN WORK PERFORMED AT THE AIRPORT INDUSTRIAL CENTER/TECHNOLOGY PARK OF GREATER LOUISVILLE ($36 MILLION)

· $10.9 million for Mk 45 Mod 5” Gun Mount Overhauls (BAE Systems, formerly United Defense)

· $7.8 million for Mk 110 57 mm Naval Gun (BAE Systems)

· $5.2 million for Mk 295/Mk 296 Ammunition for Mk 110 57 mm Naval Gun (BAE Systems)

· $3.3 million for the Mk 38 Minor Caliber Gun System (BAE Systems)

· $2 million for Mk 32 Surface Vessel Torpedo Tube Remanufactures (BAE Systems)

· $1.3 million for the All-Electric Torpedo Launcher (BAE Systems)

$4.5 million for Phalanx Next Generation (Raytheon)
$1 million for Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) Weapon System – Launcher Switching Multiplexing Unit (Raytheon)
UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE ($5.6 MILLION)
$2 million for the Biometric Signatures Research project
$1.3 million for the Center for National Security Research – Signature Exploitation project
$1.3 million for the Bio/Nano-MEMS Center for Defense Applications
$1 million for the High Technology Mass Spectrometry Laboratory for the Identification of Chemical Signatures
UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY (OVER $2.5 MILLION)
$1 million for the UK partnership with Ft. Knox to develop a Rapidly Deployable Visualization Center
$1 million for the Military Fuels Research Program
$2.6 million for the Advanced Carbon Nanotechnology Program Consortium (UK is a member and will receive a share of this amount)

WESTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY ($1.3 MILLION)

$1.3 million for a National Network Security Test Bed

FT. KNOX ($2.15 MILLION)

$2.15 million for an Area Surveillance Radar at Godman Airfield

OTHER PROJECTS (OVER $11.5 MILLION)

$3.9 million for the McConnell Technology Training Center (MTTC)/Innovative Productivity Inc. (IPI) in Louisville
$2.28 million for the Kentucky National Guard marijuana eradication efforts in the Daniel Boone National Forest and eastern Kentucky
$2.4 million for Rapid Wall Breaching Kits (Ensign Bickford in Muhlenberg County)
$1.95 million for Soldier Portable Solid Fuel Hydrogen Generator Cartridge development (Ensign Bickford in Muhlenberg County)
$1 million for development of Weapons Shot Counters (AccuCounter in Kenton County)

The FY’07 Defense Appropriations Conference Report is expected to pass the Senate this week and then go to the President for his signature.
