Officials said time is up for deadbeat parents in Laurel County! They're cracking down in a new way with permission from Frankfort!
The county attorney said their office hopes to collect $5 million in child support this year.
That's a lofty goal they hope to reach by suspending a variety of licenses.
Kathy Allen said it's hard to believe some parents don't pay their child support.
"They should have to pay child support. That is their job," said Allen.
She spent the day with her youngest daughter Rachel at the park in London. Allen said she couldn't imagine the thought of not caring for her child.
"This is another avenue we will use to collect child support if we have to," said J. L. Albright, Laurel County Attorney.
Albright said the county attorney's office is serious about getting rid of deadbeat parents.
Their website has a list of most wanted child support offenders.
And the county now has permission from Frankfort to start suspending professional licenses for any parents who haven't paid in a while.
That would include hunting licenses, concealed weapons permits, and commercial driver's licenses.
"Once your license is suspended, you'll either have to pay completely your child support or contact Frankfort and work something out with them," said Albright.
Albright said their office is dealing with more than 4,000 open child support cases.
They hope these new measures will help close some of them.
Something Kathy Allen said is only right for those children.
"A child doesn't deserve to go through that," said Allen.
The license suspension would only be an option when a person is about $1,000 behind in child support.
The county would alert Frankfort to take action.
