PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - Friends and family gathered in Prestonsburg to celebrate one Floyd County woman's 104th birthday.
1909, William Howard Taft was president and on July 12th Goldie Conn was born. On Friday, she celebrated her 104th birthday with family and friends at Prestonsburg Health Care.
Conn's grandson, Christopher Akers, "Probably seen more than anybody here, so we all look up to her."
They describe her as independent, loving, and spunky. Family members say she looks forward to this time each year and often has requests for her big day, like riding a motorcycle through Prestonsburg with the mayor on her 102nd birthday.
Conn remembers that day, "I hopped right on the thing like the rest of the girls and told them to get me some pants."
Prestonsburg Health Care Administrator Lynn Watts says, "She loves talking about killing opossums, that is one of her big things and last year she asked us to kill one for her birthday but we couldn't find anyone to and fix it."
This year she asked for a big party so the nursing home staff organized the event complete with a pig roast and gospel music.
Watts says, "She was so excited about her birthday she was going around to the tables telling people to come to her party."
Conn says her key to living so long is simple and that its all about attitude. "I'm not old...no I'm not old," declares Conn.
That positive attitude, a strong faith, and a lot of black coffee are what Conn's children say keep the 104 year old going.
Conn says having all of her family and friends there to celebrate was the best birthday present she could have wished for...and that she is looking forward to her 105th birthday.
