Laurel County cancels school for illness again

Laurel County Public Schools are closed the rest of the week due to the flu, strep throat, respiratory infections, elevated temperatures, upset stomach and vomiting.

"We usually do have some days where they miss because of illness. I don't think that i have seen three days before," said Rinda Vanderhoof, the Director of Nursing for the Laurel County Health Department.

Nancy Morris, M.D., is a physician with two children in Laurel County Schools. She agrees with the school board's decision to cancel the rest of the week.

"From an infection standpoint, I actually think it's great that they made that decision because the kids can be away from each other and not spread things to each other, and you almost need three days. three to four days for that to be effective," Morris said.

Vanderhoof said that the best way to keep your child from getting others sick is by having your child stay inside.

"If your child is sick, you need to stay home. Take care of them. Give them plenty of fluids make sure their nutrition is in a good state and keep them isolated," said Vanderhoof.

Health officials say you can reduce the risk of becoming sick with flu vaccinations, frequent hand washing, and covering your mouth and nose during coughing and sneezing. You should try to cover them with your sleeve.

School was also cancelled last Friday due to illness. Health officials say this flu season is worse than usual.
