FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) A Kentucky Educational Television host will emcee political speeches at this year's Fancy Farm picnic on Aug. 3 in western Kentucky.
Ferrell Wellman, a former radio and TV reporter, typically presides over a panel of journalists appearing on the KET program "Comment on Kentucky."
The Fancy Farm Picnic has historically been the place where Kentucky candidates kick off campaigns. It's essentially a holdover from the days before mass communications when politicians had to seek out crowds.
The picnic is known for spicy barbecue, fiery political speeches and sweltering summer heat.
Although politics is a major draw, the event is a fundraiser for St. Jerome Parish. It typically draws some 10,000 people and generates about $250,000, primarily from the sales of picnic food, a vehicle raffle and bingo games.
