Cumberlands to add bowling as newest sport in Fall of 2013

The University of the Cumberlands’ Athletic Department is one that many envy around the nation. The success of Patriot athletics as a whole can be contributed to its outstanding student athletes, superior coaching staffs, and dedicated athletic department staff year in and year out. The Patriots currently compete in 22 sports (10 men’s and 10 women’s sports) as well as co-ed archery and cheerleading. As of August of 2013, the Patriots will be offering its newest sport, bowling.

The sport of bowling will become the University of the Cumberlands’ 23rd and 24th sport offered as both a men and women’s program will be added. The Patriots’ bowling teams will compete under the Mid-South Conference (MSC), and will be associated with the United States Bowling Congress (USBC). There will be around ten events per season for the bowling teams.

The NAIA lists bowling as an emerging sport; therefore, when enough schools begin a program, the association will sanction Championship play. Currently, there are 40 schools in the NAIA that offer both men and women’s bowling. Rival universities in the MSC that will be competing along with UC will be Union College, Campbellsville University, University of Pikeville, Lindsey Wilson College, St. Catherine College, Bethel University, as well as Cumberland University. In 2013, the inaugural Mid-South Conference Bowling Tournament will be held in Smyrna, TN on February 23rd-24th.

For a team to compete collegiately, there must be at least five members, but there are hopes to attain many more. New student-athletes are preferred, but UC welcomes current students as well.

When asked about the emergence of the bowling program at University of the Cumberlands, athletic director Randy Vernon commented, “I think bowling will be a great addition to our sports program. It is a popular sport throughout the United States and is gaining popularity in the state of Kentucky. It seems like a natural fit for our University. We hope to have a coach in place by the spring semester, so that he/she can begin to recruit for our team in the fall of 2013.”
