MOREHEAD, Ky. – Freshman John Lamb came off the bench to shoot a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, including 4-for-4 from beyond the arc, and 4-for-4 from the free throw line to lead host Morehead State over the Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team Thursday night at Ellis T. Johnson Arena, 62-53. The loss is the Colonels’ fourth straight defeat, and drops their record to 6-9 (3-4 OVC), while the Eagles of Morehead improve to 5-9 (3-4 OVC).
The Colonels led for most of the first half, their largest lead coming after senior Darnell Dialls hit a free throw to complete a three-point play, putting the visitors up by nine. The Eagles, however, would not go away, as they responded by immediately reeling off eight straight points. It took an Adam Leonard three with 14 seconds remaining to put the Colonels up before half, 21-18.
The second half played out similar to the first. The Colonels led by as many as eight, but could never quite put away the scrappy, sharp-shooting Eagles. With 7:02 remaining in the game, Morehead freshman Kenneth Faried hit a jumper that put the Eagles up for the first time since the opening minutes of the game. Lamb then checked in the game, and they would never trail again.
The Colonels kept it close in the last seven minutes, with Leonard and Lamb exchanging three-pointers. However, in the end it was Lamb who outdueled Leonard, and the Eagles finally pulled away from EKU.
Dialls led the Colonels in scoring with 16 points, while Leonard and junior Mike Rose each chipped in with 15. Only three other Colonels scored. Lamb led the Eagles with 18 points in only 11 minutes of play, while sophomore Maze Stallworth supplied 15 and Faried added 11.
The Colonels return to action in just two days, traveling to Charleston, Ill., to play Eastern Illinois Saturday at 8:15 pm.
