RICHMOND, Ky. – On Senior Day, Eastern Kentucky University’s volleyball team fell 3-0 to the Murray State University today at McBrayer Arena in Richmond, Ky. Before the match began, EKU honored seniors Bridget Mustard and Amanda Wilson. Once the match began, Ashley Nenninger led the Racers (14-12, 11-5 OVC) with 12 kills and a .579 attack percentage.
Set scores were 25-20, 25-20 and 25-10.
Junior Lindsey Loescher led Eastern Kentucky (6-21, 4-12 OVC) with 11 kills. Mustard finished the match with five kills, two digs and four blocks. Wilson totaled eight kills and a .211 attack percentage.
Sara Hayden contributed nine kills and a .571 attack percentage for Murray State. Setter Jade Guo finished with four kills, 39 assists and two service aces.
The Colonels opened the match by scoring the first four points but the Racers answered with a 4-0 run, including two kills by Nenninger, to tie the set. After Chelsea Lee tied the score at 7-7 with a kill, Murray State scored the next two points and never trailed again. A kill by Mustard tied the score at 14-14, MSU won the next five points to go on top 19-14. Alison Mugler’s kill at set-point gave Murray State a 1-0 lead.
Eastern Kentucky didn’t trail in the second set until midway through the set. A kill by Mustard made it 6-4. Back-to-back Racer errors extended the Colonel lead to 11-7. An Eastern error allowed MSU to tie the score 12-12. Moments later, Murray State took its first lead of the set on a kill by Hayden. A kill by Becca Lamb and an EKU attack error pushed the visitors in front by four, 20-16. The Racers scored the final two points of the set to take a 2-0 lead into intermission.
A kill by Nenninger pushed MSU in front 4-3 in the third set and the Racers cruised to a third set victory. Guo’s service ace made it a 14-6 score. Murray State scored the final seven points of the match, the last six coming off kills. Teresa Krog contributed three kills in the final run.
Murray State posted a .358 attack percentage for the match, finishing with 47 kills and 13 errors. Eastern Kentucky hit .119 with 19 errors and 32 kills.
The Colonels will conclude the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday when Austin Peay visits McBrayer Arena. The match is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
