BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - No. 20 Union College reeled overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to post a 79-64 victory over visiting Ohio Dominican University Saturday in the Union College Lady Bulldog Classic.
Ashley Lunsford (Orlando, Ky.) posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds to go along with five assists and three steals. Jessica Baker (Canmer, Ky.) poured in a season-high 15 points, while Brooke Smith (Pineville, Ky.) and Carley Blankenship (Lexington, Ky.) chipped in 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Union (2-1 overall) struggled in the first half, trailing by as much as 11 points (36-25). The Lady Bulldogs closed out the half on a 6-2 run to pull within 38-31 at the break.
An 8-2 surge cut the margin to 40-39, and Union took its first lead of the game when Smith scored with 10:41 left to make it 48-46. A pair of Meredith Fox free throws tied the game at 50-50, but Susanna Todd (Eubank, Ky.) buried a 3-pointer to put Union up 53-50 with 9:16 remaining.
From that point on, Union never trailed again as it steadily built onto its lead en route to the 79-64 victory.
Ohio Dominican struggled from the field in the second half, making only 20 percent (6 of 30 shots) from the field. Fourteen of ODU's 26 second-half points came from the foul line as the Lady Panthers made 14 of 15 from the charity stripe.
Ohio Dominican finished the game hitting 32.7 percent (18 of 55 shots) from the floor and 82.8 percent (24 of 29 free throws) from the line.
Fox paced Ohio Dominican with 24 points, while Kirsten Ruen recorded 16 points and 13 rebounds.
The Lady Bulldogs shot 46.4 percent (26 of 56 shots) from the field and was 45.8 percent (11 of 24) from behind the 3-point line. However, Union made only 16-of-24 free throws (66.7 percent).
In the other game of the Classic, Tennessee Wesleyan College defeated Midway (Ky.) College 76-55.
The Lady Bulldogs next take the court at the Bethel (Ind.) College Classic Friday and Saturday.
