Clay County used a smothering defense to limit the Letcher Central Cougars to ta season low point total winning 55-50 at the Mountain Classic. The Cougars shot just 29% in the first half as Clay County built a nine point 1st quarter lead and led by as many as 13. Clay County was led in scoring by DJ Wilson who had 15 and Wilson was 6-6 from the free throw line in the 4th quarter. Tigers point guard John Vernon Hooker had one of his best games of the year. The super sophomore had eight points, six rebound, three blocks and two steals!
Letcher Central never seemed to get on track offensively and did not have an answer for Clay County's matchup zone. The Cougars top three scorers, Banks, Blair and Proffitt combined to shoot just 10-for-34. LCC was led by Charlie Banks who 16 points and 10 rebounds. Devin Blair added 10.
Clay County did see their 4th quarter lead shrink to four points due to a lack of free shooting. The Tigers were just 15-of-27 at the charity stripe in the final frame.
Clay County moves on to play Perry Central in the semi-finals on Friday at 7:00pm. Letcher Central will meet East RIdge in the consolation bracket Thursday at 6:30pm
