LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Jonathan Ferguson scored 28 points to lead
Elliott County to a 68-55 win over Shelby Valley in the first round
of the Sweet 16 boys' state basketball tournament Thursday night.
Ferguson was 16-of-18 from the free-throw line and hit two
3-pointers for the Lions (25-6), the 16th Region champion. The team
is making its first Sweet 16 appearance and will play the winner of
Thursday night's June Buchanan-Warren Central first-round game in a
quarterfinal on Friday.
Shelby Valley, the 15th Region winner, was led by Jacob Bryant
with 18 points on 9-of-12 field-goal shooting.
The Wildcats (28-5) pulled ahead at the start, leading 18-10
after the first period, and led by as many as nine points, 19-10,
with 6:59 left in the first half before Elliott County started to
catch up and finally pulled ahead 27-26 with 1:23 left in the half.
The Lions took off from there, building a 41-34 lead after three
quarters and then going ahead 68-52 with 27 seconds left in the
game on a putback by Dustin Gilliam.
Jeremy Jackson hit a 3-pointer six seconds later for the final
Ethan Faulkner had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Elliott County.
Jonah Justice added 12 points for Shelby Valley.
