LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Greg Rice had 23 points and 10 rebounds as
Covington Holmes beat South Laurel 55-49 in the quarterfinals of
the boys' Sweet Sixteen state basketball tournament Friday.
The Bulldogs (25-9) advanced to the semifinals for the first
time since 1990 when they made it to the state championship game
before losing to Louisville Fairdale. They will play Scott County,
a 68-53 quarterfinal winner over Adair County on Friday, in
Austin Hill added 21 points for Holmes, the 9th Region winner.
Jordan Hammonds paced the Cardinals with 18 points and eight
rebounds. Ty Proffitt added 12 points for the 13th Region champs,
who had their 19-game win streak snapped.
Proffitt's first basket didn't come until 35 seconds into the fourth quarter with South Laurel trailing 37-28.
His basket triggered a 10-2 run that saw the Cardinals trail 39-38 with 4:10 remaining, but the Bulldogs answered with a 9-2 run that put the game out of reach.
