WISE, Va. - Rising UVa-Wise sophomore Alexa Hernandez has been selected to try out for team Puerto Rico in the upcoming International Softball Federation World Championship.
The Puerto Rican National Team will compete in Haarlem, Netherlands Aug. 14 to Aug. 25. The competition is held between athletes from around the globe, is held every two years and is the top event for softball worldwide.
"I am honestly just honored that my name came up for this opportunity to represent not only the College but my family and friends as well", said Hernandez. "I am thankful for the opportunity and hopefully will go down and do my best."
Hernandez earned All-Mountain East Conference Second-Team accolades following a season in which she hit .328 with three homeruns and 16 RBIs for the MEC Tournament Champion Cavaliers. The second baseman had her strongest day of the season at home against the University of Charleston when she hit a pair of homers, the last of which was a game-winner for UVa-Wise.
"I am thrilled for Alexa and her family. This is such a cool opportunity for her, and I couldn't think of a better person to represent UVa-Wise and our softball program," said UVa-Wise Head Coach Karen Bitter.
Hernandez left for Salinas, Puerto Rico on Monday to begin competing in the trial process. The trial process will last until Aug. 4 at which point the team will being a series of scrimmage games in Toronto, Canada prior to flying to the Netherlands on Aug. 10 to begin preparations for the ISF competiton.
