COLUMBUS, GA -- A day after receiving NCBWA All-Southeast Region First Team honors, Railsplitter second baseman Andre Rodriguez was crowned with Daktronics All-Southeast Region distinction, officials announced late Thursday afternoon.
In his debut season for the Railsplitters, Andre Rodriguez made an immediate impact throughout the conference and region as he was named All-South Atlantic Conference First Team and NCBWA All-Southeast Region First Team. He will add a selection to the 2012 Daktronics All-Southeast Region First Team to his resume.
Hailing from Las Piedras, Puerto Rico, Rodriguez led the Railsplitters in nearly every offensive category. He carried a .414 batting average, a .494 on-base percentage and a .600 slugging percentage to lead LMU in those offensive splits. His batting mark was good for second in the South Atlantic Conference, 19th in the nation and second in the LMU record books for a single season. In reaching base in nearly half of his at-bats, Rodriguez finished fifth in the SAC and fifth in single-season history at LMU.
The rest of his stat sheet from the 2012 season was impressive as he piled on a team-high 60 hits that included 12 doubles and five home runs. He crossed home 30 times this year and plated 27 to account for 57 runs for the Railsplitters. He also drew 22 walks in total.
All told, Rodriguez notched 15 multi-hit games with four three-hit games and two four-hit contests. He saved his best for last as he ended the season on a tear, slamming 33 hits in the final 18 games of the season for an eye-popping .516 batting average with seven doubles and a .719 slugging percentage over that span. His best performance of the season came in the opening game of a three-game set against Carson-Newman as he went 4-for-5 on the day with three RBIs and a big fly.
The South Atlantic Conference was well-represented on the Daktronics All-Southeast Region list with Tusculum leading the way with four first teamers and a pair on the Second Team. Craig Goodman, Cade Stallings, Aaron Guinn and Cody Coffmann garnered First Team honors with Carlos Santana and Alexi Colon being tabbed as Second Team. JJ Jankowski (Catawba) and Casey Allison (Wingate) were also selected to the First Team, rounding out the South Atlantic Conference's presence on the list.
Chris Thomas of Lander University was named the Southeast Region Pitcher of the Year. Mount Olive's Geno Escalante was named the Southeast Region Player of the Year.
The first team selections will move on to the All-America ballot. The Daktronics All-America programs honor student-athletes in Division II athletic programs. The voting, nomination and calculations are all conducted by the school's sports information directors.
