PRESTONSBURG Ky. (WYMT) - The high school football season kicks off tomorrow, and our Appalachian Wireless game of week takes us to Prestonsburg for the Blackcats and Perry Central.
The Commodores and Blackcats will each be bringing in new quarterbacks, and PBurg head coach John DeRossett noted how his team will need to prepare for both the run and pass. But also says how physical the Commodores can be.
"Well they're physical. I mean, they run the ball", said DeRossett. Anytime you get a team that's in the shotgun, you think they're going to pass and you're always in retreat mode. But what we saw from Perry Central is not only they can pass, but they're a very physical football team, and when (Austin) Pray drops the ball to run, he's a load to tackle, so he's going to be able to scramble, he's going to be able to throw. He's got some great targets. But what I noticed at the scrimmage was that they were able to run the football real nice. They got a good line. They got two or three physical backs. They got some backs that are a little faster than others and they can change the tempo on you, so we're going to have to be ready to defend the run and the pass."
Last season, the game went down to the wire, with the Commodores pulling out the 35-34 victory. Friday night, we could see another close game when these two square off in Prestonsburg. According to Perry Central head coach Justin Haddix, the game will come down to who makes the least mistakes.
"I think it is going be pretty much similar. It is going to be a shootout", said Haddix. Its going to be a four quarter game. You know, our kids have got to be ready for that. It's the same thing it has been here. I have been here for three years. We do not change a whole lot. Same thing at Prestonsburg. They are going to do what they do, and we are going to do what we do, so it is going to be a good game Friday night. You know, I think we have to contain that quarterback and know where #8 (Bryson Williams) is. I think they held a couple of kids out, a linebacker and maybe a running back. We are just going top have to come out and play our football, and our style. Take care of the football, and make plays when we get them."
The game between the Perry Central Commodores and the Prestonsburg Blackcats this Friday night is our Appalachian Wireless game of the week and will be live on WYMT and wymtnews.com.
Coverage of the game will begin at 7:30pm as Earl Owens and Jim Frasure will have the call.
