Atkinson earns College Sports Madness weekly honor

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State senior Devon Atkinson has been named College Sports Madness Ohio Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

Atkinson helped MSU to a pair of OVC road wins last week. The Eagles knocked off Southeast Missouri, 75-59, on Thursday and topped UT Martin, 88-74, on Saturday.

A native of Farmville, N.C., Atkinson collected 21 points and 18 assists in two games last week. He also committed just two turnovers in 58 minutes at the point guard position.

Atkinson posted his first Division I double-double in 46 career games with 12 points and 12 assists against UTM. He registered nine points and six helpers vs. SEMO.

The 12 assists are the most by a conference player this season. The performance also marked his third double-figure assist effort of the year, which is a league best.

Atkinson is tied for first in the league in assists (5.5) and ranks fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9). He averages 7.4 points in a team-high 30 minutes per contest.

The Eagles will play six of their next eight at Johnson Arena. MSU hosts OVC foes Belmont on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET and Tennessee State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
