The Bengals today signed HB BenJarvus Green-Ellis, an unrestricted free agent who ranked tied for second in the NFL over the last two seasons in rushing touchdowns (24).
He led New England last season in rushing yards, touchdowns and postseason rushing yards.
Green-Ellis (5-11, 215; Mississippi) is a fifth-year NFL player in 2012, having spent all four of his previous seasons with the Patriots. He played in all 19 games last season as New England posted a 13-3 regular season record (AFC East champions) and advanced to Super Bowl XLVI, losing 21-17 to the New York Giants.
Over the last two seasons, Green-Ellis’ total of 24 rushing TDs was topped by only Houston’s Arian Foster (26). Green-Ellis equaled the total of Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson and Philadelphia’s LeSean McCoy. Green-Ellis led the Patriots with 13 TDs in 2010 and with 11 last season. Also last season, he led New England in rushing yards (667) and postseason rushing yards (140). He rushed for an additional TD in postseason play.
“BenJarvus is a no-nonsense runner who consistently gets the ball down the field, and he has a nose for the end zone,” said Jim Anderson, Bengals running backs coach. “He’s also an asset to the passing game, not only as a receiver but as a blocker. More than all that, he’s the kind of guy who comes in to work hard every day, a great team player and a great addition for us.”
Green-Ellis had a career-best 1008 rushing yards in 2010.
