BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Sophomore catcher Brantley Smith singled through the left side in the bottom of the 11th to give the Gardner-Webb baseball team a 3-2 victory over Morehead State on Thursday night at Moss Stadium.
Smith brought sophomore left fielder Alex Newman to the plate with the game-winning run in walk-off fashion. Newman had previously singled to center, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Senior righty Conner Scarborough picked up the win in relief for Gardner-Webb (3-0-1), while freshman right-hander Matt Anderson took the loss for Morehead State (3-2).
GWU tied the game at two in the bottom of the eighth when senior pinch runner Danny Yelverton came around to score on a double by senior first baseman Brad Collins.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI from sophomore third baseman Henry Rundio.
The Eagles took their only lead in the top of the fourth when sophomore catcher Chris Robinson stroked a double to left center, which scored sophomore center fielder Duran Elmore and junior second baseman Jeff Birkofer.
Birkofer and sophomore first baseman Kane Sweeney collected two hits apiece for MSU.
