Bears cruise in season opener

LAURINBURG, N.C. – The University of Pikeville put six players in double figures and opened the 2012-13 basketball season with a 105-64 win over St. Andrews (N.C.) University Saturday afternoon.

The Bears blistered the nets in both halves from the field. Hitting 54.3percent from the field and 57.1 percent from the arc, the Bears built a 45-27 lead at the half.

In the second half they were even more explosive, connecting on 63.2 percent overall and 66.7 percent – 8-of-12 – of their three-point shots to post 60 points.

The team finished 43-of-73 for 58.9 percent from the floor and 12-of-19, or 66.7 percent, from downtown.

The Bears were equally strong on the defensive end, limiting the Knights to 37.5 percent shooting in their opening game and only 25 percent from the arc on the afternoon.

The lone downturn for the guests came in the turnover column, where they gave it back to SAU 17 times to equal their assists.

Senior Jamar “Deuce” Briscoe led the half-dozen double-digit scorers with 23 points while adding five rebounds off the defensive glass. Sophomore Hobo McCoy came off the bench to fire in five second-half threes in only six tries to finish with 15 points in just seven minutes of playing time.

Junior Josh Whitaker added 11 to go with a game-high seven assists, while the trio of seniors Chris Johnson and Trevor Setty and junior Darnell Tubbs each added 10 markers.

Junior forward Brandon Greene, the only true inside presence on the active roster, finished with eight points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots.

Junior guard Clavontae Brown came off the bench to lead all scorers with 25 points, sinking 9-of-14 shots in the game. The next highest scorer was junior guard Christopher Clay, who hit for nine.

St. Andrews, a first-year member of the Appalachian Athletics Conference, committed 25 turnovers in the loss.

Pikeville will return to action on Tuesday night in its home opener when it entertains Knoxville College. The game will tip off at 7:30 p.m. in the 6,500-seat East Kentucky Expo Center.
