KINGSPORT, Tenn. – A five-run first inning set the stage for Lindsey Wilson College to pick up a 10-2 win over the University of Pikeville in the opening round of the 2013 Mid-South Conference softball tournament.
The loss sends the Bears into the loser’s bracket where they will meet Shawnee State at 2 p.m. at Domtar Park, while the Blue Raiders will meet U.Va.-Wise in the next round. The Cavaliers were 9-0 winners over SSU in the opening round.
Lindsey Wilson, the top-seed in the eight-team field, needed only four hits to post the big first inning. A double to the fence in right-center by Kristina Krupinski scored two runs and Ali Hart delivered a triple to plate two more, and an errant throw allowed her to score to make it 5-0.
The Bears got two runs back in the top of the third. It began when left-fielder Jordyn Hale singled, followed by a walk by Sarah Kinney, and when centerfielder B.J. Howard singled one out later, the bases were loaded.
Right fielder Sarah Belcher laced a shot off the pitcher to plate Hale with the first run, and shortstop Hollie Hinkle delivered Kinney with a walk.
But the Bears left the bases full and trailed 5-2 after the frame.
Lindsey Wilson got those runs back in the bottom of the inning, added one in the fourth and put it away with two more in the fifth.
In addition to Howard and Hale’s singles, Hinkle added the only other hit.
Kayla Morgan went all 4-1/3 innings, allowing 10 hits. Nine of the 10 runs were earned. She struck out two and walked three.
