Bears remain unbeaten with Mansfield win

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville forced 28 turnovers and shot nearly 55 percent from the field in a 109-45 win over Ohio State-Mansfield Sunday afternoon.

No. 9 Pikeville rolled against the inferior Mavericks to improve to 7-0 on the season heading into Mid-South Conference competition on Thursday at Campbellsville. It is the best start in the seven-year tenure of Coach Kelly Wells.

The Bears ripped the nets for 65.7 percent in the first half. That, combined with 16.0 percent shooting by Mansfield, led to a 59-19 halftime lead. Pikeville was 45.5 percent from the arc while Mansfield was only 1-of-7.

Senior Trevor Setty and junior Darnell Tubbs had 20 points apiece. Setty was 4-of-6 from the arc while Tubbs missed only one of his nine shots from the floor.

Freshman Cody Malicoat had the best game of his young career, needing only 17 minutes to score 14 and grab 16 rebounds to lead the Bears to a 58-39 advantage in that category.

Senior Jamar Briscoe finished with 11.

Mansfield was led by Delvonta Cheathem’s 16 points, pacing three players in double figures. Ryan Carper came off the bench for 13, while Tevin Brown finished with a double-double, scoring 11 and pulling down 10 boards.

Senior Chirs Johnsona dn junior Josh Whitaker had six assists each, while Tubbs had four and five steals. Whitaker also had six steals and four rebounds.

Pikeville’s game at Campbellsville will tip off at 8 p.m. The women’s teams will meet at 6.
